What is a hearing instrument ?

A hearing Instrument is an electronic, battery-operated device that amplifies and changes sound to allow for improved communication. Hearing instruments receive sound through a microphone, which then converts the sound waves to electric signals. The amplifier increases the loudness of the signals and then sends the sound to the ear through a speaker.
Hearing instruments prices vary, depending on many factors, including...one versus two hearing instruments, aural rehabilitation programs, warranty, after-sales services, accessories, circuit sophistication, telephone coils, directional microphones, insurance coverage and other factors. All hearing instruments are not the same. There are huge differences in technology, price, application and results. In general, there are 4 basic styles of hearing aids... Behind the Ear (BTE), In the Ear (ITE), In the Canal (ITC), Completely in the Canal (CIC).

How can hearing instrument help?

On the basis of the hearing test results, the audiologist can determine whether hearing instruments will help. Hearing instruments are particularly useful in improving the hearing and speech comprehension of people with sensorineural hearing loss. When choosing a hearing instrument, the specialist will consider your hearing ability, work and home activities, physical limitations, medical conditions, and aesthetic preferences. For many people, cost is also an important factor. You and your doctor must decide whether one or two hearing instruments will be best for you. Wearing two hearing instruments may help balance sounds, improve your understanding of words in noisy situations, and make it easier to locate the source of sounds.

What can you expect from your hearing instrument?

Using hearing instruments successfully takes time and patience. Hearing instruments will not restore normal hearing or eliminate background noise. Adjusting to a hearing instrument is a gradual process that involves learning to listen in a variety of environments and becoming accustomed to hearing different sounds. Try to become familiar with hearing instruments under non-stressful circumstances for several hours at a time.
